Abstract: Field experiment was conducted during 2001-03 to study the genetics of fresh seed dormancy in brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) by analysing the dormant and non-dormant parents, F1 generation (direct and reciprocal crosses) and F2 generation (selfing and intercrossing). Results revealed that significant differences existed between the reciprocal crosses for dormancy in F1 generation indicating maternal/ cytoplasmic inheritance of seed dormancy. However the segregation pattern in F2 generation revealed that the differences were not significantly different indicating that cytoplasmic inheritance is not present in F2 and that the differences between reciprocal F1’s are due to maternal effects. Chi-square test analysis indicated that in F2 the segregation pattern for dormancy, on selfing of F1 hybrids ,monogenic dominant, digenic complementary dominant and recessive gene action operated for seed dormancy in different crosses .Segregation in F2 populations revealed that dormant types are dominant over non-dormant types. Among intercrosses between hybrids in F2 generation all crosses showed dominant nature of segregation for seed dormancy although in different magnitudes. The monogenic nature of fresh seed dormancy in F2 of the cross ‘Arka Neelkant’ x ‘Manjarigota’ and F1 intercrosses between ‘Manjarigota’ x ‘Arka Keshav’ and ‘Arka Keshav’ x ‘Manjarigota’ suggest that transfer of this character is easier in breeding programmes.
