Abstract: Rich genetic diversity occurs in ornamental trees, shrubs, climbers, herbs, succulents, etc. In the Indian subcontinent Western Ghats in India is one of the eight hot spots of the works and it harbours about 4,000 flowering plants. Of which, only a few are utilized to some extent for their economic values. There are many endemic flowering plants found in Western Ghats having ornamental value. For sustainable utilization and conservation of these important resources. Exploitation and collection were undertaken to collect indigenous ornamental species from Mahabaleshwar and adjoining area of Maharashtra and Waynad region of Kerala. The passport data including habitat, distribution, present status of flowering and fruiting period were recorded. Multiplication and evaluation of selected species for horticultural traits is being carried out at IIHR, Bangalore. Bulbs/tubers were harvested from accessions of Zingiber neesanum, Hitachenia, Arisaema nilaporens and Heracleum coutellensis for multilplication and evaluation. A total number of 28 accessions have been established. Twelve accessions were found to be promising. Euphorbia lutea, Lobelia nicotian and Paracaryopsis had attractive foliage and Zingiber neesanum has attractive inflorescence that can be utilized as ornamental pot plant in landscapings/indoor decoration, which helps in making the environment healthy.
