Abstract: A study was taken up to observe the expression of heterosis in the intervarietal hybrids of bottlegourd and scope of improvement by this method. Two round fruited varieties No.7 (Saharanpur, UP) and Karnataka Local as well as two long fruited varieties long Dhavidar and Jhalarwali together with a collection No.45-1-1- from South Africa were used for hybridization. The F1 hybrids exhibited vigour in the form of early seed germination (by 4 days) and early fruit maturity (6 to 15 days). The flesh thickness of hybrid fruits was higher by 16-27%. Yield recorded 10-48% over the better parents. Spread of harvesting period was greater in hybrids.
