Abstract: Cultivation medicinal plant species outside the forest areas is essential to ease the pressure from the fast depleting wild resources and to provide quality raw materials for herbal industry. Bringing medicinal plants under cultivation necessitates the availability of quality seed and planting material. Mucuna is an indigenous leguminous twining annual medicinal plant whose seeds are widely used in traditional medicine for the treatment of asthma, coughs, and diseases of central nervous system and also as an aphrodisiac. The seeds are a good source of L-dopa (L-3, 4 dihydroxy-phenylalanine), which is a well-known anti-parkinsonian and antidepressant drug. The present day demand is met mostly from the collection of the natural material and cultivation in a limited area. At Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), superior lines (IIHR MP 10, IIHR MP 11 and IIHR MP 5) for high seed yield, L-dopa with different maturity period without irritable trichomes on pods have been identified. Few field and seed standards are proposed for the production of quality planting material in this crop. Field standards: Land to be used for seed production of velvet bean should be free from weeds and volunteer plants. The seed production fields need a minimum of two inspections the first before flowering and the second at flowering and fruiting stage. Since Velvet bean is a highly self pollinated crop and is a climber the isolation distances 10 meters (as recommended other pulse crops). Maximum permitted off types can be 0.1 to 0.2 %. Seed standards: The purity of seeds is 98% with germination percentage of 80%. Velvet bean seeds are bold and can easily be distinguished from the weed and other crop seeds, the maximum permissible standards for theses mixtures can be 0-2/kg. The elite lines identified at IIHR have clear morphological traits that can be distinguishable at vegetative stage; flowering and fruiting stage makes the roughing easy. The mechanical mixtures from other varieties, other crops and weed seeds can be easily identified as the lines have distinct seed coat characteristics to maintain the purity of the seeds.
